Bellarmine Gets Another Shot At CCSJ On MSFL Semifinal Saturday
WHITING, Ind. – The Bellarmine sprint football team heads to northwestern Indiana to battle Calumet College of St. Joseph in the Midwest Sprint Football League semifinals this Saturday.
The Knights are 1-3 all-time against the Crimson Wave and have dropped the last two. Bellarmine held an 18-7 lead entering the fourth quarter at Calumet on October 5 in Whiting, but Calumet scored 11 unanswered points to send the game to overtime. Quarterback Nino Barbosa ran in the eventual game-winning score in the first overtime as the Crimson Wave would stop the Knights on 4th-and-goal from the 21 to seal the victory.
These teams also met last November in the semifinals. Calumet jumped out to a 21-0 halftime lead and held on to win 28-14. Barbosa threw for two touchdowns and ran for two touchdowns while accumulating 107 yards on the ground. The Crimson Wave went on to claim the MSFL Championship with a 31-0 win over Saint Mary-of-the-Woods the following week.
Barbosa this season averaged 116.8 yards through the air and 46.0 yards on the ground this season, both fifth in the MSFL.
Knights quarterback Kyle Horvath completed the regular season averaging a league-best 294.2 yards per game and tossed a league-best 20 touchdowns. Also helped by Brenden Reid's 63.7 yards per game rushing, Bellarmine finished second in the league in total offense behind SMWC at 392.7 yards per game while Calumet checked in at third with 314.7 yards per game.
On the defensive side, Calumet held opponents to a league-best 194.5 yards per game and 12.2 points per game. Bellarmine allowed 247.5 yards per game, second in the league, and 21.3 points per game, third in the league, during the regular season.
Kickoff on Saturday is slated for 6 p.m. ET (5 p.m. CT).
