MSFL Names Week 1 Award Winners

The Midwest Sprint Football League Has Selected Its Players Of The Week for Week 1 of the 2024 season. Each week, the league will select an Offensive, Defensive and Special Teams Player of the Week.

The Week 1 Award Winners Are:

OFFENSIVE:

Kyle Horvath, Bellarmine (Land O' Lakes, Fla./Land O' Lakes)

In the Knights, 27-21 victory over Quincy, Horvath threw for three touchdowns. Horvath completed 19 of 28 passes for 258 yards.

 

DEFENSIVE:

Tony Madrueno, CCSJ (Whiting, Ind./Whiting HS)

Tony Medrueno led all players in the game with seven total tackles and three sacks in the Crimson Wave's 27-6 road victory over Walsh. Six of his seven tackles were for a loss and that was for a total of 29 yards. His three sacks pushed the opposing offense back 19 yards. Tony was the driving force of a defense that held Walsh to 17 rushing yards, 191 total yards of offense and only 6 points on the road.

 

SPECIAL TEAMS:

Marques Reese, SMWC (Indianapolis, Ind./Ben Davis HS)

Reese paced the team with five receptions for 70 yards including a long of 37 yards in the 41-19 victory over Midway (Ky.) in the season opener. He averaged 14.0 yards per reception. He scored the first touchdown of the year when he returned a kickoff for 83 yards for a touchdown in the first quarter against the Eagles to answer an early Midway score.

 

A LOOK AHEAD: 

Three games are on the slate for Week 2 of the MSFL season. Midway will travel to Oakland City to play a game at Enlow Field in Evansville, Ind., on Saturday, Sept. 21 at 1 pm (CT). The Pomeroys of Saint Mary-of-the-Woods College will travel to Quincy for the first time ever to take on the Hawks on Saturday at 3 pm (CT). On Sunday, Sept. 22, Bellarmine hits the road to take on Walsh at 1 pm (CT). Calumet St. Joseph will enjoy a bye week.
