Pomeroys headline the Inaugural MSFL Postseason Honor Roll
The inaugural Midwest Sprint Football League season came to a close with the final postseason games, St. Mary-of-the-Woods coming away with the win over the regular season champions Calumet College to take home the Playoff Championship title. The Pomeroys also claimed the most postseason awards in the inaugural season with 15 on the 1st and 2nd team rosters. The Crimson Wave gathered 13 honorees and Bellarmine University followed with 12 honorees.
St. Mary-of-the-Woods totaled 11 first-team all-conference selections and four second-team selections, the most of the six schools. Calumet and Bellarmine each had 5 selections on the first-team list, CCSJ with eight and the Knights with six on the second-team all-conference list. Quincy University totaled 10 all-conference honorees, Fontbonne University had seven honorees and Midway University with four honorees across the two all-conference teams.
Three student-athletes from three different teams were awarded the inaugural individual MSFL accolades. The first was a three-time MSFL Player of the Week, for Offense and Defense, Brenden Reid from Bellarmine University, garnering MSFL Offensive MVP. Reid, a Freshman Running Back, finished the season with 772 Rushing Yards, 181 Receiving Yards, and scored a total of 8 Touchdowns. Reid averaged 110.29 Rushing yards per game and 25.86 Receiving yards per game.
Quincy University's Ray Lingard added MSFL Defenvie MVP to a list of 2022 honors that included being named the league's Defensive Player of the Week at week five. A Sophomore Linebacker, Lingard totaled 72 tackles in the inaugural season, 42 being solo tackles, 16 tackles for a loss of 58 yards, 6 sacks for a loss of 38 yards, and averaged 10.3 tackles per game.
Rounding out the list of individual player awards, Calumet College's Jared Saez was recognized as Special Teams MVP. Saez, a Freshman Kicker and Punter, was named Special Teams Player of the Week twice during the season. Saez was 8/9 in extra points kicks, 4/4 in field goals, and punted 1058 yards in 34 attempts with an average of 31.1 yards.
Securing the inaugural MSFL Coach of the Year honors was St. Mary-of-the-Woods' Blaine Powell, who guided the Pomeroys to a 6-1 overall record and the Playoff Championship title.
The final awards were given to 12 student-athletes who throughout the season embodied integrity, leadership, respect, responsibility, and sportsmanship on and off the field. The inaugural Captains of Character honors were awarded to Devan Hendricks (Bellarmine), Brenden Reid (Bellarmine), Dylan Cortez (Calumet), Alexander Dellaechaie (Calumet), Dylan Scruggs (Fontbonne), Clayton Arrowood (Fontbonne), Tarice McKinney (Midway), Zecharias McGahan (Midway), Taylor Klusmeyer (Quincy), Noah Getz (Quincy), Jazaiah Douglas (St. Mary-of-the-Woods), and Nolen Noel (St. Mary-of-the-Woods).
